Here's a mixed case to take you on a trip along the South of France and the Mediterranean coast, west from the red soils and heat of the Roussillon on the Spanish border, through the vast and reinvented Languedoc region, and east to the southern most vineyards of the Rhone Valley. The breadth of styles and vigneron talent here is quite staggering.

Roussillon

Formerly forming the Languedoc-Roussillon, the Roussillon has since gone solo. On the border to Spain, it has a distinctly Catalan look and feel. Scorched red soils of clay and schist, whilst the signature varietals and talent somewhat echoes our mates up in the Swartland.

Languedoc

The Languedoc region of France is vast, with almost three times the vineyard area of South Africa alone. For a long time, the region has built a reputation for churning out generic and inexpensive wines, but as ever in the world of wine there are exceptions.

It's a region in renaissance, reinvented, with a treasure trove of old vines and exciting pockets of high potential terroir. Relatively affordable vineyard has attracted a new, young generation of vigneron whose mission, quite simply, is to farm better and make better. The Languedoc of today is full of innovation, with the highest percentage of organic vineyards in all France, and a serious crop of talented vigneron.

The good news for us wine fans, is that the inherent value of the region remains.

Costières des Nîmes

Costières des Nîmes is the southernmost wine region of the Rhône, and far lesser known to the might of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and co. The blend composition is also different, with the reds typically leading out with Syrah rather than Grenache.

'Mediterranean Mix' includes 1x each of the following bottles:

Moulin de Gassac Picpoul de Pinet 2022

Vinified at world famous Mas de Daumas Gassac, this is a Mediterranean coast classic. The Picpoul varietal has an easy going texture, bright acidity and happens to be an ideal match for oysters and shellfish alike this summer.

Mourgues du Gres Terre d’Agence 2020

Petit Manseng led, with Roussanne, Viognier and a splash of Vermentino, this is an exotic white blend. Fleshy and textural, laced with minerals and a saline finish. Beautifully put together by the Collard family, owners of this leading biodynamic estate.

Il Roc des Anges Llum Catalanes 2020

A white blend from the Roussillon, with Grenache Gris and Macabeu, planted between 1919 and 2008. Grown on very barren slate soils without clay, yielding a wine of crystalline fruit and tension. Il Roc des Anges among the top addresses in the region.

Moulin de Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Vinified at Mas de Daumas Gassac, of Cabernet fame, this Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a local grower is an overachiever. Well judged picking date for optimum ripeness, and matured in stainless steel for around 6 months, this is translucent and textbook Cabernet.

Clos du Gravillas Lo Viehl 2019

Nicole and John Bojanowski farm 8ha of organic vineyards on a plateau surrounded by the wild landscape of the Haut Languedoc Natural Park. Traditional Languedoc varietals on show, whilst the wines show real elegance rather than power. The 'Lo Veihl' is 100% Carignan, from a 100+ year old vineyard. Wild and lively black fruit, a savoury grip, it's intense and bright at the same time.

Clos du Gravillas Rendez Vous Sur La Lune 2020

An elegant red of Carignan, Syrah and Cinsault, you could serve this just a little chilled. Bags of red and blackberry fruit character, a savoury undertow. Delicious.
