The Laherte Freres Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature NV hails from a plot selection of old vine Chardonnay on the slopes south of Epernay, with 50% of the wine from the base vintage and 50% of the reserve.
It's a smart wine from smart, sustainably farmed sites on soft clay and chalk. The base wine sees alcoholic fermentation and maturation in oak foudre and barrel, with a little lees stirring for texture, and just partial malolactic fermentation for an overriding sense of freshness. Secondary fermentation in bottle and on the fine lees for a minimum of 2 years.
Crucially, this Champagne sees no addition of dosage (sugar), receiving the designation of Brut Nature. The result is a Blanc de Blancs of real depth and trademark Laherte tension. 'Citrus peel, crushed rocks, mint, dried flowers and white pepper'. A wine of 'tremendous stature' and 'insane value' according to Vinous.com.
Vital and exhilarating to drink. Our allocation for SA is very ltd.
