The Habemus Papam cuvee from Santa Duc, incorporate the plots of Le Pradel and La Font du Pape, respectively to the east and centre of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Old vines planted on soils rich in sandy clay on the surface with very calcareous subsoils and some round pebbles.
Typically a blend of Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%), this can be enjoyed a little earlier than Les Saintes Vierge. The contribution made by Syrah is unusual for a Santa Duc wine, but La Font du Pape is noteworthy for water retention, allowing the varietal to express characterful aromatics and freshness.
The resulting wine is sculpted and detailed, never overdone and laced with florals, red fruit and vital length.
As with all the Santa Duc reds, meticulous extraction is employed for balance. Maturation takes place in a combination of Austrian oak foudre, allowing complexity to develop without influence, and Amphora to encourage elegance and finesse.
Always a favourite among the team on release, and it speaks for a restraint and elegance this famed appellation can enjoy in the right hands. Enjoy!
