Santa's first cuvee from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, at the 'lieu-dit' (named place) of Les Saint Vierges, understandably holding a special place in the memory for the Gras family.
The site is co-planted with Grenache (80%), Mouvedre (10%) and Counoise (10%), with an average age of vine at 70 years. Situated on soils of rough sand, rich in quartz and mica with shell debris from safres of the Miocene period. Farmed employing biodynamic certification.
As with all the Santa Duc reds, meticulous extraction employed before maturation in Austrian oak foudre and amphora, allowing complexity to develop while striving for underlying finesse.
An impressive core of black cherry and red plum, with exotic aromas of herbs, violets and delicate peppery spice. The palate strikes a balance of richness and energy, a signature of the Santa Duc reds. A wine that will take more time to unfold relative to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam.
