Champagne Monmarthe
Based in the Premier Cru classified villages of Ludes, on the north slopes of the Montagne de Reims, the Monmarthe family have been growing grapes since 1737. In 1931, they took the decision to stop selling their worth to the Big Brands and produce their own set of Champagne.
At the helm today are Jean-Guy Monmarthe and his son Gauthier, tending to 15ha of vines within Ludes. They employ sustainable farming, via HEV (High Environmental Value) certification since 2014, and are a member of ‘The Vigneron Independent’.
Alex Dale and Jean-Guy met in Burgundy, where Alex ran the infamous Pickwick's, an English Pub with a strong local wine offering. Jean-Guy would travel into Beaune with a boot load of Champagne, only departing once all the cases had been spoken for. Quality bubbles and a top personality, paved the way for Monmarthe to become the toast of many a trendy establishment in Beaune. Many moons later, we're delighted to bring these to the shores of South Africa.
The house cuvee of ‘Secret de Famille’ represents around 90% of production, whilst they also produce highly limited wines under their ‘terroir selection’, from single vineyards and in single vintages.
