Château Mourgues du Gres
A former agricultural estate of the Ursulines de Beaucaire since the 16th century, the estate owes its name to the nuns called 'Mourgues' in the Provençal language. 'Grès' comes from the rounded rocks of the Costières de Nîmes that give our wine their character.
In the courtyard of the estate, the Latin motto on the sundial SINE SOLE NIHIL (Nothing Without Sun) celebrates the Mediterranean climate. It brings optimal ripeness for a naturally rich and balanced wine.
François and Anne Collard took on the family estate in 1990, excited at the prospects of the newly anointed AOP Costières de Nîmes, situated in the SW of the Southern Rhone at the border of Provence.
The estate received official organic and biodynamic certification in 2014. In the winery, interventions such as sulphur are minimal for purity and vibrancy of fruit expression.
These are a thrilling set of wines, from a top producer in a relatively unsung appellation. As a result, they are terrific value to style.
