Meaning “Well Born” in Spanish, Bien Nacido was planted on the historic site of the Rancho Tepusquet land grant, a plot of land that was granted to Tomás Olivera in 1837, when California was still a part of Mexico. The Bien Nacido Vineyard apparently boasts the ‘most single vineyard designations’ in the world of wine.

Farming is practicing organic, yielding around just 2 tons of grapes per hectare. The wine blended from ‘Z’ Block, planted 1992 on limestone soils, and ‘X’ Block, planted in 1973, originally to own rooted Riesling before being grafted to the Estrella River Clone Syrah in 1986.

The wine is fermented via indigenous yeast in concrete, with around 70% whole cluster inclusion. It is then transported to French oak barrels of varying size to rest for 18 months ahead of bottling. A minimal amount of sulphur only added at bottling.

This is a testament to cool-climate Syrah under the right hands. Exotic black and red fruits, spices which are attractive in youth, but with the balance to age gracefully for further evolution.
