Domaine des Roches Neuves (Thierry Germain)
Thierry Germain’s lineage is Bordeaux but in pursuing pure, varietal Cabernet Franc, he would eventually land in Saumur-Champigny. Today, his Cabernet Franc bottlings account for much of the finest and emotive expressions in the Loire, whilst his influence spans the world of wine, not least here in the Cape of South Africa.
He's an engaging and thought-provoking vigneron, with deep connections and understanding of biodynamic viticulture.
Thierry and his son Louis preside over 28ha of vines, predominantly planted to Cabernet Franc. These show an elegance, purity of fruit and an almost Burgundian feel. Whilst his Chenin Blanc bottlings are exciting and tense in youth, building weight with time in bottle. Built for the long haul, these are well worth exploring.
The wines are matured in large oval and round foudres (depending on the type /water retention of the soils with each plot), several levels down in their tuffeau cellars, which make for a terrific tour.
